Hi Dimitris
I agree it’s a HH – lack of yellow iris, pale patch at bill base and rufous/buff on flanks all say it’s not an Australasian. Also in HH dark markings pass just below eye, through eye in Aus.
Cheers
Steve

Subject: [canberrabirds] Hoary-headed Grebe (I think) and Lecustic Wood Duck at ANU.
Hello all.
Did the rounds of ANU today with my camera, primarily because I spotted a very approachable Grebe in the upper section area of Sulivans' Creak, next to the football field. Yesterday I ided it as a Hoary-headed as it's pale, shows considerable amount of yellow on bill, and bill gape does not appear to extend pass the eye... I'm still inclined to think it is a Hoary, but would like confirmation as non-breeding Hoary is not a plumage I'm a familiar with plus it has a dark eye. I'm gonna try to get more photos tomorrow if it's sunny, bird approaches to less then half a meter if you sit quietly on the bank. 3 White-plumed HEs in the nearby flowering Eucalypt as well.
The lecustic Wood Duck was at the mid section of the creak (small lake like basin with small reed bed and island) in the other footy field. Nice bird.
Cheers and thanks!
Dimitris
