Howdy All,

They're at it again. Both adults are currently sitting on the nest after it has been vacant for a few weeks. Obviously they've now bred for the third time this summer. I first reported it in late October, then we had young birds vacating the nest for a second time in late January, they bred again in early March and now here in late April they're having a fourth go for the summer. The nest is quite large now, quite obviously a nest unlike the first time it was constructed and used. It definitely seems that they can breed year around now, as we are quite obviously coming into winter now with the night temperatures, but that doesn't seem to be deterring them.

I am aware that there are some who regard these birds as a pest, and some who would therefore wonder why I am reporting their breeding. When I first asked about their habits I can widely converging responses which ranged from breeding once, perhaps twice a season, in the same nest, never in the same nest etc. I can at least now report from my own observations that they repeatedly use a nest throughout the summer (yet to find out whether they then occupy it again next season) and keep breeding into winter (the latter observation is the main new thing I have to report since the last breeding). I thought it was worthwhile having all this "on the record" to the list as I don't think many are observing them that much (and I only am because they're in my back tree! <grin>).

Unless there are objections I will keep reporting as successive breedings take place, so that we have a record of how often they are breeding (well my pair at least) and how many times they use this one nest.
Cheers.

Paul T.
Higgins.
