Late this afternoon, while moseying contentedly through the Parkwood Road
horse paddocks on an old cayuse before a westering sun, I put up a big flock of
Common Starlings from fairly short grass, and they kept on rising for some three
seconds. At a conservative guesstimate I would say at least 300 birds. They
headed north then wheeled about to the south before coming north again. As they
were only about 12 metres above the ground their wings made a robust
swooshing sound as they passed overhead not unlike that of a sudden strong wind
passing through a clump of River Sheoaks. Finally they went to ground about 70
metres away.
