Thanks Bronwyn for the advice to arrive early.  Near the Wickens Place  car park were small groups
that formed part of a flock  with greater than 50 birds.  The notice near the car park mentioned by
Phillp contains the word keening.  My on line dictionary states this is derived from an Irish word to wail.
This is what the young birds were doing in begging for food.  Indeed, the flock can be found by locating this sound.
