I've always thought chickens wandered away from their nest cackling in order to inveigle potential raiders from the site. Back home, when we ran free-range chickens, we often hurried outside to try to find the nest of an errant layer as soon as it commenced cackling. Despite the ruckus raised by the raucous fowl, it never lead us to its nest. Lady Luck, rather Henny Penny's performance, sometimes lead us to the cache of cackle berries.
