There is a lot of breeding going on:
National Gallery: I had planned to visit the sculpture garden for the last time
on Wednesday but Con and Nick beat me to it. Nevertheless, had a great time.
Saw the pied currawongs cf to the nest, plus noisy miners with 2 dy near the
entrance. In one tree further in near the lake was a 'crèche' of 5 species with
dependent young, including magpie larks with 3 dy, white plumes with 2 dy,
willie wagtail with 2 dy, red wattlebird with 2 dy, and fairy wrens with >2dy
(tiny- just out of the nest). A currawong flew in and was chased by ~10 adult
birds, the most persistent being the wagtail. An obvious advantage of a crèche.
Have other people noticed multi-species crèches?? Also, strangely, a sub-adult
kangaroo was present.
Black Mountain- East of Glenloch Interchange-Friday. 2 olive backed orioles
(swooping choughs), 6 white winged choughs with young in nest. 2 leaden
flycatchers nest building, 3 sitellas-1 carrying food, 2 striated pardalotes
with 1 dy, 2 noisy friarbirds with 3 dy. 2 white throated treecreepers, 16
little ravens and 8 Aust ravens. 2 black faced cuckoo shrikes, 2 speckled
warblers. 4 rainbow bee-eaters flew over. Crimson rosellas with dy. 3
kookaburras. Yellow robin, grey currawong.
Lake Ginninderra-Western foreshores-Sunday: Lots of breeding. Dusky
woodswallows nb and another group with 2 dy. Black faced cuckoo shrikes cf,
magpie larks with 3 dy, red wattlebirds with 2 dy, kookaburra cf, 2 groups of
mynas with dy, 64 starlings including many dy (probably > 20), Eastern rosella
with dy, 10 swallows and 8 fairy martins. 28 little black cormorants, 1 great
egret, 26 seagulls,1 domestic duck. 68 coots, 8 black ducks. I think I could
hear reed warblers with ny.
