I found the program very strange. There seemed to be an underlying expectation (by the programs authors at least) that the pigeons would fly in a straight line to their loft. My father was a keen pigeon racer (before WWII) and knew very well that the birds didn't travel in straight lines - I think largely from where the ones that didn't make it home were found. The actual mechanism was unknown at that time.
It was also intriguing that (the way the program was presented) the radios seemed to break down in every major battle, but the pigeons always got through!
