Hi!
We have had the koel calling here in Ulladulla for a number of weeks now. Its extremely difficult to tell if there is more than one female around the area as you only hear the loud brassy "sqeaky toy" call the female gives, from only one area at a time. Where the 'Koweel" call of the male can come from at least 2 directions at times.  Of late the "quadel quadel qudadel" call of the male is now the most prevelent and this is often called immediatley in reply to the female when she calls. So it would seem that they are a pair that keep in loose contact by calls, only getting in really close contact when there's an urgent need.  The Channel-billed cuckoos are still around and these are almost certainly a pair as they call to one another through-out the day and are seen in flight to-gether 90% of the time.

Cheers

Bob Rusk.
