Hi all,
I am just back from a great 3 days exploring the area around Hay, Griffith,
Hillston and Rankin Springs. I picked up 5 lifers in the process and
covered 1,670 kms.
Highlights were:
A lone female CHESTNUT QUAIL-THRUSH at Loughnan NR.
24 BROLGA arriving at Fivebough Swamp at dusk.
4 AUSTRALIAN PRATINCOLE and over 70 BANDED LAPWING (some with young) by
the E boundary of Oolambeyan NP (thanks Geoffrey Dabb).
2 BAR-SHOULDERED DOVES and a pair of WHITE-BROWED TREECREEPERS in Binya
SF along road to Mt Brogden Walking Track (thanks Damien Farine).
3 WHITE-FRONTED HONEYEATERS feeding on flowering Eremophila along Monia
Gap Rd (28 kms from Rankin Springs).
Several good views of male CRESTED BELLBIRDS, one giving its
ventriloquial call while I was watching, and the many SPLENDID
FAIRY-WRENS at Nombinnie NR, Loughnan NR & Taleeban.
Large numbers of YELLOW-PLUMED HONEYEATERS at Taleeban.
MAJOR MITCHELL'S COCKATOO in Griffith below Scenic Hill Reserve.
SINGING HONEYEATER, COCKATIELS and nesting WHITE-BREASTED WOODSWALLOWS
at Campbell Swamp near Griffith.
Many WHITE-BROWED and MASKED WOODSWALLOWS among others feasting on
insects attracted to flowers in grassy pine woodland inside Nombinnie
NR.
It was interesting to note the many Cockatiel on the drive home. Groups
were seen at Gidginbung, Yeo Yeo (near Jindalee) and Combaning. On a sadder
note on the drive out I saw 3 dead Superb Parrots along the highway at
Capricorn Stud.
For those interested I would be more than happy to forward a full trip
report to them.
Cheers
