caterpillars

Recent observations of black-eared cuckoos and other cuckoos at Uriarra Picnic Area, east, mention hairy caterpillars on the Casuarina cunninghamiana trees.

Some, perhaps most, of these larvae are the moth Anestia semiochrea (Butler) in the family Arctiidae. The larvae are currently on the trees in large numbers and feed on the lichens growing on the bark.

The male moths are small with grey forewings and orange hindwings and have been noticed flying about the trees. The female moths are wingless and crawl about on the bark. There are also moth cocoons commonly on the trees.

Cheers,

Ted Edwards
