Shepherd’s Lookout was
windy and rainy on Tuesday but quite good birds. I am pretty sure the
nankeen kestrels have nestlings. I heard what I thought were nestlings begging. At one time I could see two birds
outside the nest and one inside a hollow. Plus I saw two birds mating outside the hollow. The most likely explanation
is that the pair have chicks in the nest nearing fledging (ie bird at entrance of hollow) and were mating for
the next clutch. A far less likely
alternative could be there are 3 adults. But my reference books don’t mention
this. I waited for a while to get a guaranteed sighting of chicks being fed, but
the adults seemed disturbed by me, so I left. If anyone is visiting, keep your
eyes on the kestrels. 2 double bar finches, 1 common bronzewing, GST, 1 pair of magpies with very large nestlings, had great views up close of spotted and striated pardalotes. Brown thornbill collecting yellow box bark-fibre for a nest. Benj
