Since it was such nice weather yesterday I spent a few hours birding in the
Gunning-Gundaroo area.
Along Lade Vale Rd I found my first BROWN SONGLARK of the year. The male
bird flew off making its distinctive twanging call. Further along I came
across some SPECKLED WARBLERS and various thornbills close to where I saw
the Chestnut-rumped Thornbill earlier this year. Here a HORSFIELD'S
BRONZE-CUCKOO seemed to be up to no good hanging around a pile of wood
which may have contained a nest since the fairy-wrens and warblers were
agitated. At one point a WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE flew over. Other birds seen
included 3 VARIED SITTELLAS, 3 BROWN-HEADED HONEYEATERS and 3 WHITE-EARED
HONEYEATERS.
Along Berebangalo Rd I heard a PALLID CUCKOO calling and saw 2 BROWN
FALCONS. Near the intersection with Lade Vale Rd I watched a SOUTHERN
WHITEFACE bringing juicy grubs to a nest inside a small hollow of stocky
tree/shrub. Along Yass River Rd I came across a small flock of
WHITE-FRONTED CHATS. There were at least 5 males and a female near a dam
about a km from 'River View' property. Further along the road at another
large dam I found a female MUSKD DUCK. I didn't see any flame robins who
may have already returned to higher ground.
All in all a good few hours birding.
Cheers
