Hi all;
After my post on the possible Black-eared cuckoo, I received several
emails in which I was very politely welcomed to the country and told
that this sighting would be rare for Canberra. People pointed out that
confusions are possible and the most likely suspect is an immature
Black-faced cuckoo shrike. I dont know if the development of BFCS, so
I'm not sure if one would expect an immature at this time of year. And,
I'm new to the area and birds of Australia, so I'm probably mistaken.
Here are my observations, taken from approximately 10 m away while the
bird perched high in a tree.
The upper parts were rather uniformly gray.
The breast and belly were uniformly whitish. That is, there was no
barring or smudged gray on the breast or flanks.
There was a clear black eye stripe but I failed to note if there was a
white supercilium.
I did not get a good look at the undertail pattern but THOUGHT I saw
barring.
In flight, there was a clear sense of tawny on the leading edge of the
underwings.
The only field guide that I have is Pizzey and Knight (7th).
If anyone would like to add data to help in this discussion, then that
would be great. As I said, I'm probably mistaken so I wouldn't advise
people to go out searching.
Cheers,
