This afternoon, on the flat roof of the building that houses the Uni Coop
Bookshop at ANU, we watched a pair of Wood Ducks strutting around. She made
the usual mewing call of the female Woodie while he stretched his neck, raised
his hackles and emitted long bursts of chirp-chirp calls. "He
sounds more like a little frog chirping than a love-struck duck," Younger Brat
opined.
Anyhow, the female Woodie took wing a couple of times, buzzed
over the male's head and landed next to him. Seemed like she was trying to
get him to follow her someplace. Then, she took off flying east, but he stays.
Three minutes later she returns, buzzes him a couple more times and,
finally, Chirp-chirp gets the message and follows Mew-mew east. We
wish them a satisfying and productive tryst.
