I spent Saturday visiting some birding spots in the Cootamundra-Junee area.
On the drive out from Canberra I passed a Peregrine Falcon on a kill in a
paddock by Little Bedulluck Creek along the Barton Highway.
A major highlight was close-up views of a Black-chinned Honeyeater in the
Migurra Reserve car park near Bethungra. A km up the road there was no sign
of any Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters at the usual site by the railway.
At Bethungra Reserve (aka Lake Bethungra) there was an awesome collection
of birds including 1 Australian Shelduck, 9 Musk Duck, 1 Black-winged Stilt
, 9 Black-fronted Dotterel, 11 Shoveler, 1 Hardhead, 4 Flame Robins, 6
White-browed Babblers, 1 Whistling Kite and a Wedge-tailed Eagle soaring
over the Ulandra Range. A quick wander along the Murumbang Interpretative
Walk in downtown Ganmain only revealed a single Peaceful Dove.
Near Ilabo there were 2 Yellow-billed Spoonbills on a dam by the roadside.
At Junee STW a count of the resident? Plumed Whistling-Ducks produced about
50. Right on dusk at the 'Junee Urban Wetland & Boardwalk' I found 2 Little
Grassbirds and 3 Purple Swamphen among the more common waterbirds. On the
drive home I passed a Tawny Frogmouth hunting along Wantiool Creek just
outside of Junee.
