Thank you for all the suggestions to the mystery 'chuk' bird. They included: Blackbird, White-eared Honeyeater, a Whipbird, and Chestnut-rumped Heathwren. I am familiar with the calls of the Blackbird, White-eared Honeyeater and also the Whipbird but not with those of those of the Chestnut-rumped Heathwren. Nicki Taws who suggested the latter also identified the exact sort of bush they were in, and recommended patience in getting a sighting. On balance, therefore, probably the Heathwren but I will have to go back and make sure.
Con
