Thanks for the warning, Geoffrey. I was just about to install Office
2007 but will hold off for a bit in view of this problem. Doubt if
all the clients in island countries will install 2007 for a few
years. Is is possible for you to save your document in an earlier
format and make it available in that format to those of us using
primitive systems?

Hi Geoff,
I'm one of those weird ones who does actually want to read your
5-page document on hobbys vs hobbies - but I can't open your word
attachment. I had a similar problem the other day with an attachment
my sister sent me and she said they had recently upgraded to Word
2007 and it seems there may be a problem with our work system (Word
2003) reading the newer versions (a patch is apparently being worked
on by the IT people here but no time frame for its installation!). I
wonder if this might be a similar situation. Both hers and your
documents have a .docx extension rather than the normal .doc
extension. Could you please try to save the document as an earlier
version under Save As, or else simply paste the text into an email
for me?? Sorry, but I am interested...
Harv

Subject: [canberrabirds] Hobbys revisited
You may recall the exchange about the spelling 'hobbys' in which a
couple of other people were quite interested. I had a nagging doubt
about it and did a bit of a Google and was amazed to find that
Julian's labelling in FLIKR of a Canberra pic 'Australian Hobbys' is
practically the world authority for how you spell 'Australian Hobby,
two or more of'. This is no doubt being followed in all the best
books and journals. The question is tied up with whether you should
say 'I saw two Hobbys (or Hobbies)' or 'I saw two hobbies', which,
as it turns out is a much more difficult question.
The attached note is the result of further research and thought on
the subject. BE WARNED - do not look at this unless you are
interested in words and language.
You might think I am mad for having written 5 pages on the
subject. As evidence to the contrary I might mention that I once
turned up for a COG walk where it was pouring rain with mud
everywhere. A lot of people went on it but not me.
