We have just disturbed some form of game bird in our very weedy disused chook run. Frances got a better look than me and noticed chestnut - red patches around the neck area. This suggested painted button-quail, which would be a life-bird for me. It seemed a bit small for the other suspect (brown quail - more likely in the immediate habitat) as it escaped through the chain-link fence and vanished, on foot, up the rocky hillside. It didn't fly at all. I didn't get a good enough look to complete a rare bird report but with some extra eyes we may get lucky.
