For those who may be interested, the Draft Management Plan is on the link
below. Hard copies may be available from Environment ACT, thru Canberra
Connect 13 22 81 Closing date for submissions is 2 April 2007.
I will be drafting a response from COG, and have only had a quick read of
it, but overall I cant see major issues. COG was represented in a working
group some time ago when the revised Plan was discussed - Julie McGuiness
and I attended this. The issue of enhancing waterbird habitat is certainly
discussed in the Plan in various places. The Plan also addresses the
impacts from urban development, and the need for an improved cycle path
separate from the walking path. I would be happy to have any
input/comments from members who are interested in looking at the Draft,
particularly from the habitat improvement angle. As the ACT Government is
cash strapped and under stringent budgetary regimes, what monies might be
available for significant on-ground improvements is uncertain..
Mark is right in saying that airport proximity considerations are an issue
in terms of attracting/encouraging more birds, particularly the larger ones,
and this is mentioned in the Plan.
cheers
Jenny
