Its not very often that you get to see both species of Quail within half an hour...
Stubble Quail - 4 flushed from stubble beside 'Franklin Pond' adjacent to Mulanggari Grassland Reserve at 7.50pm.
Brown Quail - 1 flushed from tall grassland by reeds at 'Gungahlin Common' near Discount Tyres at 8.15pm.
These sightings gave me a good opportunity to compare flight etc. The Brown Quail dropped rear end first into grass over 50 m away after the initial explosive flight, which sounded lower in noise. The Stubble Quail I flushed 1or 2 at a time and they flew for well over 200 m, several disappearing from sight, others landing more upright or forwards. The noise as they took off seemed a little higher than the Brown Quail.
Cheers
Marnix
