While on our irregular evening walk along the foreshore of Yerrabi Pond I
stopped twice by the small patch of rubbish-filled reeds before the
Waterfront development/parkland. At 8pm I couldnt find it but between 8.30
and 8.40pm I stood quietly on the footpath while the single Baillon's Crake
pottered around the floating vegetation literally 1-2 metres away. The bird
did not seem to mind myself or the many walkers with dogs passing by. It
sat for a few minutes in the open quietly preening then commenced foraging
again. It would make for a great close-up shot if anyone cared to take some
pictures.
For those interested the crake can be seen anytime after 8.00pm, depending
on light conditions. No binoculars required.
Cheers
Marnix
