Marnix sent the below message to birding-aus which
I'm sure is relevant locally. The appearance of this most appealing and elegant
of birds is becoming as much a highlight of the Canberra northern suburbs in
summer as the Satin Bowerbird has been a feature of the Canberra southern
suburbs in winter. Would be nice to have around the house. Should it be a
motivation to move to the other side of town? I'm glad this started early enough
to catch the apparently increasing trend, in time to go in the GBS Report (as in
following extract from the species text):
Superb Parrot Polytelis swainsonii
Canberra is on the south eastern edge of the natural part of this bird?s
range (Davey 1997), so it is not surprising that the majority of records are
from the north-western suburbs. It requires open woodland with grass
understorey. It has a very strong seasonal distribution pattern, with a clear
peak in the summer time. ....Rank: 122, A = 0.00163,
F = 1.60%, W = 1.7, R = 0.066%,
G = 2.47.
