G’day Tobias,
Great picture! Maybe you shouldn’t have
said it wasn’t photographed in Australia
and watched the reaction….Now for all the gullible out there, would you
care to identify it? My guess is an eclipse plumaged Black-headed Gull, which
is on the Australian list.
Cheers,
Mark

Subject: [canberrabirds] Kelly's
Swamp, Friday
Went to Jerrabomberra
Wetlands in time for dusk on Friday. Reading Sandra's message, I
realise that I didn't see the Yellow-billed Spoonbill, even though I
saw the many Pelicans. However, I did see Australian Spotted Crake and
Buff-banded Rail at Crakes Alley, and Baillon's Crake and a Latham's Snipe in
front of Bittern hide. The Spotless Crakes that I was trying to find, however,
proved spotless (haha). There were a pair of birds on the muddy/grassy
shores opposite the lookout at the far end that looked to be slightly larger
than Dotterels and with a straighter posture/longer neck. They disappeared when
I moved closer. Appropriately, a Rufous Night Heron flew over just as night was
beginning to fall.
P.S. This bird (photo) was photographed
in Japan,
