Out of our region I know, but not so far out as not to be of interest to
us. (Indeed I would argue that it's more 'our region' than is the coast,
but in another forum perhaps.) Having spent the weekend there I'd like
to add my voice to earlier contributers in support of this wonderful
place and the forthcoming community-organised Fivebough Birding and
Nature Fair. (See www.fivebough.org.au) Environmental flows have been
introduced to both Fivebough (easily publicly accessible at the edge of
town) and Tuckerbil Swamps for the first time in 8 years, and the
response by the birds has been spectacular. The sheer numbers and
diversity at Fivebough are staggering, including Magpie Geese, huge
numbers of Whiskered TErns, breeding stilts and of course ducks, and an
astonishing number of Baillons Crakes. The advantage of waiting until
the fair - apart from offering well-merited support and the great
program they've devised - is the opportunity to see the usually closed
Tuckerbil Swamp. On the other hand it is drying fast and the breeding
Brolgas may have already left. And who knows the whimsical minds of
inland waterbirds?
My suggestion is that a trip soon and a return in November would be far
from wasteful duplication.
So, do yourself a favour, eh??
cheers
Ian
