Hi Everyone!!!!
So, at the very end of last year, I visited the sub-Antarctic Islands of
Australia and New Zealand. An experience I cannot convey in words
unaccompanied by pictures!! To that effect, I am presenting a public seminar
slideshow as part of the CSIRO Discovery lecture series on Biodiversity.
This event will be free and open to all!!!! I will have as yet unseen
footage of the wildlife of these highly surreal and remote regions of the
world, and many many many slides I took - this will be the first opportunity
many of you have had to see them!!
So Please Please Please come along! I would love to see you all. And if not
for me, then for improving the prospects of the Sub-Antactic biodiversity
region!!! And ofcourse, please bring as many friends as possible! I will be
speaking to a 170 seat lecture theatre and I would much prefer it if it were
filled with people!!!
It would be great to see you all there! Please spread the word and forward
this on to any interested people!!!
Take care,
Geoff.

Bounty on the High Seas: The Mega Diversity of our Pooly Known sub-Antarctic
The Sub-Antarctic Islands of New Zealand and Australia are among the most
amazing, biodiverse and pristine environments on earth. However, they remain
among the most poorly understood, a startling fact considering their
biological significance and opportunity they present for better
understanding our sub-Antarctic and Antarctic flora and fauna. Their
location on the Antarctic Convergence Zone, as well as their isolation from
human habitation, has played a key role in this.
These Islands; the Snares, Auckland, Campbell, Macquarie, Antipodes, Bounty
and Chathams, share a unique assemblage of species identifying them in their
own subtle way. One common theme on these islands is the vulnerable nature
of the highly significant habiting species, such as Wandering Albatrosses
and Chatham Island Cormorant. Feral animals, human ignorance and an
increasing threat of global warming are currently taking their toll on the
Islands, and raising international conservation concern.
Come and join Geoff as he discusses these issues and presents a collection
of slides taken from an expedition to the sub-Antarctic Islands from late
last year.
