Hello to all the Twiddlers and Tweakers,
At the risk of
seeming tedious,I also found the Audubon caller useless.....However to
reiterate, get a small piece of glass or mirrors, the scrap bin of a glazier
will provide half a tonne of suitable cullett.....cut or get them to cut a
small piece say 40 mm X 25mm one and a half inches by one inch smooth the
edges, and corners on a bit of Sand Paper or a brick.....get a small piece of
polystyrene packing say 20 mm cube, three quarters of an inch...moisten glass
with saliva...strike a corner of the little cube on the mirror,by moving the
cube around even breaking a small piece off with the finger nail,a rather
satisfying chip chip chip can be produced imagine you are striking a
match....now it does not work all the time, but in spring in reasonable cover
it will, you are actually providing a call similar to the alarm call of the
Yellow Robin, the Forest Busy Body, having a strong sense of social
justice...with a little patience in thick cover one may often be surprised
with what comes out of the Woodwork.... Now the very cognicenti in this game
will have a taped call.....Many years ago I noted the remarkable number of
birds that came to the call of an angry Yellow Robin trapped in a mist net,I
recorded this call and it really sucks them in....In spring the call of the
Fan Tail,or Pallid Cuckoo is also effective....Good Tweaking...Terry
Gourlay.
