Today at lunchtime at Fyshwick Sewage Ponds I came across a strange little bird at Pond 1 (pond closest to Kelly's car park). It was in the willow furthest from Kelly's.
  • Small dumpy bird with half-cocked tail, like a ball of feathers (Shape reminded me of Winter Wren of Europe).
  • Black striations along upper half of back.
  • Rufous-brown crown.
  • White eyebrow.
  • Longish tail with central feathers longer, giving rounded appearance.
  • Overall brown appearance of upper body and back, light underneath.
  • Foraging for insects on surface of water from dead branches of a willow.
  • Seemingly unafraid of my presence some 2 metres away on the bank.
  • Mixing with group fo Fairy-wrens at one point.
  • Did not seem to call while I was watching it for 30 minutes.

My best guess would have to be an immature Little Grassbird although its behaviour seemed strange and it held its tail half-cocked? Also there seemed to me to be no visible striation on its belly or chest.

In the neighbouring fields I could hear at least 3 Cisticolas. Cisticola is a possibility, although this bird had no yellow anywhere and its shape was all wrong.
Any ideas welcome.

Cheers

Marnix
