Julian has asked
some big questions and we don't know all the answers. So as not to be repetitive
to everyone else, I am letting anyone interested know that I have answered him
privately. The reasons for increasing presence locally of each of the species he
mentions are quite different. There is a lot of useful
information on the history of local birds in the book: Wilson, S. 1999, Birds
of the ACT: two centuries of change, and for the regional context Taylor, M. & Canberra Ornithologists Group 1992, Birds of the ACT:
an Atlas.
There are any number of books on the subject and people more skilled
in bird photography than me, to give advice. I am not familiar with http://www.birdata.com.au/map_top.html.
He is right to see the difference between recording rate and abundance. Most
books overlook this, my book covers this in great detail and all the data are
built around abundance rather than recording rate.
