Abstract and Bio
Adrian Sleigh approaches this topic as an
epidemiologist and physician. He has not specialised
in flu but who has worked for 30 years on research to
control infectious diseases in poor communities in
many parts of the world, including most of Asia and in
Sth America. He began to work on influenza as a
service to colleagues who requested inputs in 2004,
and after being sent to Hong Kong to help out during
the SARS outbreak in 2003. The talk will lay out the
background of avian and human influenza, noting how
they are transmitted and how they highlight our
regional connectedness. He will point to some puzzling
questions regarding spread and control of influenza.
Many of these questions derive from wild life biology,
others from viral evolution, and most intersect with
multiple disciplines. Transdisciplinary dialogue is
needed and the seminar will highlight this aspect most
of all.
