Thanks to everyones replies on this. My boss recognised one of the calls of the Koel someone sent me. Cheers Marnix
Marnix This call sounds like that of the koels I have heard at Evatt and Mawson recently: http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/images/audio/eudynamys-scolopacea.mp3 I found this on the AustralianMuseumwebsite http://www.amonline.net.au/birds/ However, most of the time they just repeated the first part of the call over and over. It calls in the afternoon and sometimes mornings. Everything points to a Common Koel. However he looked at the COG Photo Gallery and said it looked most like a Fan-tailed Cuckoo and not a Koel. However when I played the Cuckoo's call to him he said it wasnt the right call. The only sound file I could find for the Koel was from a Hong Kong Bird website and he said it didnt sound exactly like it. His description of the call was (exact words) : "DOOOOOO-Weee ((DOOO is constant pitch) Wee rapid rise in pitch with rapid decent)" He lives in Wanniassa. Has anyone else heard a Koel or similar bird in Wanniassa recently? Are there still any Koels around the suburbs?
