Just back from a couple of days survey work in the far south of NNP
(along the border, both sides of the Boboyan Road). Not ideal conditions
(for me or the birds - 37 degrees yesterday, foggy and wet this morning)
but a few things of interest. This is the only unburnt section of NNP,
and is a real lyrebird haven. I saw or heard at least half a dozen. At
one point it seemed like June, with 3 males audible at once, and not
just the tentative practice of youth, but what sounded to my ear like
virtuosi. I was particularly taken with a convincing rendition of baby
maggies begging. In the Snow Gum-Candlebark forest Satin Flycatchers
have apparently scattered from the wetter gullies after breeding (or
perhaps there is still not enough optimum habitat to go around?);
likewise one party of Red-browed Treecreepers. My biggest surprise
though was a Diamond Firetail in Snow Gums at 1330m, albeit with lots of
grasses flowering. I've never seen one down there (though I'm sure YOU
have!) and the ACT Atlas has no records for anywhere in the south.
cheers
Ian
