woodland birding

3 separate visits in 3 days to 'Bibaringa'
produced a lot of good birds, all seen from the Cotter Rd, 2 Diamond
Doves, 3 (possibly 4) Peaceful Doves, 3 (possibly 5, including
a juvenile) Sacred Kingfishers, 1 Crested Shrike-tit (obviously
with young as it flew off with food in its bill), 9 Diamond Firetails
(2 adults, 7 juveniles), 4 (possibly 5) Brown Treecreepers, Rainbow
Bee-eaters, 1 Jacky Winter, Tree Martins, 3 King-Parrots
and plenty of Rufous Songlarks and Dusky Woodswallows. Brown
Quails were also heard.

On Saturday in the midday heat I wandered
around Callum Brae Woodland Reserve and saw the local Dollarbird
pair had fledged 2 birds. Also a Brown Goshawk, a juvenile Horsfield's
Bronze-Cuckoo, 2 Rufous Songlarks, 2 Diamond Firetails
(possibly nesting?), 4 Speckled Warblers, 8 Double-barred Finches,
Leaden Flycatcher pair and Gerygones.

On Sunday I returned to a patch of Uriarra
woodland to find the Restless Flycatcher chicks had fledged and
were flying around the nesting tree with their parents, calling constantly.
They have noticeably shorter tails and a splash of rufous/chestnut on their
breast. Also here 2 Diamond Firetails, 2 Jacky Winter (1
possible juvenile), Dollarbird, Rufous Songlark, White-winged
Triller, Common Bronzewing, Leaden Flycatcher and Dusky Woodswallow.
Driving along a section of Uriarra Rd, or 'Raptor Alley' as I call it,
produced 2 Nankeen Kestrels, 1 Australian Hobby, 4 Wedge-tailed
Eagles, 1 Black-shouldered Kite and a possible Black Kite
(too far away to confirm though).

To top off the weekend a quick visit
to Jarramlee Rd produced 5 Brown Songlarks (as per Joe's email)
and over 200 hawking Tree Martins, with the odd Fairy Martin
and Welcome Swallow thrown in. A shame about the burnt out car wreck
on the road.
