Yesterday after the summer concert at ANBG I
stopped off at the wayside beside Lady Denman Drive, (next to Acacia Inlet)
to have a quick look for any waterbirds and wait for the sun to go down (to
avoid driving "into it"). What was surprising was the huge flock of Welcome
Swallows (and some martins) assembled over there and streaming in from the east
of the lake. The wind was going in the same direction. There was easily many
hundreds of them, quite possibly thousands. I assume that the wind and the
setting sun was attracting insects to the western side of the lake and the birds
may have been following them. They certainly appeared to be feeding (not that I
could see any insects). After the sun went down, the flock dispersed a bit,
mostly birds flying east, just above the lake surface. It really was
impressive. I have not noticed that before. There weren't any swifts among them
but if that is a regular occurrence, this would be a good place to watch for
swifts.
