I have Salim Ali's 'Birds of Kerala' that you might like to have a browse through Elizabeth. It is 444 pages and the second edition of 'The Birds of Travancore and Cochin', following the linguistic reorganisation of the states of the Indian Union in 1956. It wouldn't be much use as a field guide. For that purpose I think you would be better off with a succinctly presented regional guide with good distribution maps, like the Grimmett 'Pocket Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent'.
