Greetings all: Ive just spent a few days helping
organise another tree planting for Regent Honeyeaters in the Valley and doing
the Regent Honeyeater surveys. There are Regent Honeyeaters in quite a
few places in the Valley at the moment, eg in the River Oak along the
rivers such as the Capertee River, in flowering White Box in various
places, along the Newnes track and also in roadside veg in the northern
part of the Valley (known as the Port Macquarie area). Swift Parrots are
also around in flowering White Box. Most of these places are by roadsides
or are publicly accessible.
The site we planted on near the Capertee River had
a very good variety of raptors, including a Spotted Harrier which flew low
over the site just as we finished. We finished in record time, including
getting all the planting and watering in done on the one day.
There will be another tree planting in April/May
next year and I will advertise in Ganggang for anyone who may be
interested. Its a very worthwhile cause, a social event with a catered
dinner on the Sat night after the planting, and you get to go to a
great woodland birding area - post planting on the Sunday, its usually
possible to take people to see Regent Honeyeaters. Accommodation
can be arranged in cottages or shearers quarters (low cost) for people
helping with the planting.
cheers
Jenny
