Ten people joined me for a beginners outing on Sunday morning at Lake Ginninderra peninsula.

The weather was clear and sunny but the breeze coming off the water was a bit fresh.

There were some absolute beginners in the group, so we spent some time learning how to use binoculars to spot birds quickly. The group included a ten year-old girl and her mum, both new to birding.

We had very close views of some of the common birds such as Purple Swamphen, Dusky Moorhen, Eurasian Coot, Wood Duck, Red-rumped Parrot, Red Wattlebird, Crimson Rosella, White-plumed Honeyeater, Magpie-Lark. Close views of a couple of male Darters sitting drying their wings was a treat. We also found a Black Swan on a nest in the reeds beside the jetty at the southern tip of the peninsula.

There seems to be a fair bit of demand for more beginners walks. Could people let me know if they would be interested in another beginners walk? We might try for a walk for beginners in the Campbell Park woodlands in October.

Also, for those beginners out there, please feel free to come along on any of the scheduled walks or field trips. Just let the trip leader know that you are a beginner and they will make every effort to ensure that you get to see everything and learn more as you go.

Cheers
Anthony
