Yesterday, in the early afternoon, I heard persistent begging calls from a neighbour's Eucalyptus manifera and, on inspection, was delighted to see a family party of Rainbow Lorikeets - two adult birds, and three young. The young birds were huddled together, two of them touching one parent and the other very close. The young birds had dark bills, with pale yellowish tips, and were already quite adult-coloured in appearance, though generally paler in the breast with fewer red splashes. Their tails were quite short still, about 2-3cm. I presume the family bred in the vicinity of the nearby Hawker flats, where suitable hollows exist and where the birds are regularly fed. b
