Sunday was a glorious day for the COG honeyeater migration outing, but I
suspect the honeyeaters thought it was too summery. Just a bit too warm, too
humid and a bit breezy.
At the counting site on Smiths Rd at the northern edge of Ingledene pines I had
counted 1400 honeyeaters in 20 mins on Wed morning. On Sunday we counted 1200
in 100 mins. The birds were not very confident about their direction, making
several false starts and usually waiting for large numbers to build up before
committing to crossing the open space. We saw several large groups of 200-300
birds but there were large gaps between when no honeyeater moved. The vast
majority were Yellow-faced, with occasional White-naped and a few White-eared
and Eastern Spinebills.
