Great to see such activity on the COG list lately, the discussion on Wedgies
reminds me that one can so easily take some species for granted when seen on
a regular basis. May I chip in and say that I have consistently sighted 3 X
Wedgies over the Bibaringa property (Cotter Rd west of Mt Stromlo) in the
last year or so. On one occasion a dark adult was perched in a red
stringybark on the property though most times they are soaring high over
head.
Speaking of E. Macrorhyncas & Bibaringa, hold onto your seats folks and
brace yourselves for a sighting I had in the post JAN03 regrowth (2-3metres)
there last Sunday. This one really takes the cake! If I were to say I had
a brief encounter with Cervus unicolour or a dark morph of Dama dama, would
that enlighten you. I lean slightly in favour of the former. It was a male
of the species, and seemed quite horny as I flushed him accidently and took
chase with my camera to get a definitive shot. Unfortunately, my chase
was to no avail and I had to leave to make an appointment. Please consult
a Field Guide to Mammals of Australia, Menkhorst & Knight, 2001 to put paid
to this cryptic report. I have asked the owner of the property if he plans
to charge agistment fees for this beast that might just belong to some ol'
snowy headed bloke currently putting his feet up somewhere within the Arctic
circle....

PS Take care when driving along Cotter road folks, this thing obviously
jumps fences!

Have any of you noted W-tN (or even FtS) over Canberra this summer?
I haven't.
Philip
