Having failed to get that far last weekend Frances and I went for a walk
from the Carillion to Duntroon late this morning. It was rather excellent,
apart from one sighting which I will get to at the end.
After a few of the usual lacustrine species we were delighted to observe a
clamorous reed-warbler feeding 3 fat fledglings in a nest suspended in a
willow just above the water. Two other vacant nests were visible in the
same willow. Then we saw a dollarbird in a dead tree. Many Straw-necked
and Australian White ibises just across the river. Lots of darter nests
full of large fledglings and many siblings, parents and more distant
relatives flying around. We wrote down 33 species including 4 breeding
records.
The non-excellent sight, which makes Stuart's canoeists seem benign, is
shown in the attachment. Sighted at the Boathouse Restaurant and just
beginning to rev their foul motors as we left. I'm glad I didn't vote for
either Government that allows this (even though the Commonwealth controls
the Lake, Environment ACT sets the standards for noise pollution etc).
