My highlight was the rescue of a Boobook Owl by the staff at the ANU Chifley
Library where my wife works. Pursued by about 12 Magpies it was totally
stunned when it collided with a window. My wife rang me for advice on the
best course of action for the birds welfare. Not having a clue I rang guru
Anthony Overs who advise it should be placed in a box big enough for it to
stand in as it recovered, kept in a quiet place, then released at nightfall
near where it was rescued. As it was not practical for the library staff to
be involved in the release they contacted the Zoology Dept (I think) who I
believe at the appropriate time effected a successful release of the then
recovered bird. Although I didn't even get to see what was described as a
very beautiful bird it was none the less a satisfying highlight from 2004.
And I wondered if it may have been a bird displaced by the GDE roadworks.
Some early 2005 sightings made while paddling LBG and environs on the
weekend: 4 Sea/Silver Gull chicks on the crane pontoon at the western end
of the lake, 3 small Dusky Moorhen chicks on their floating nest near
Duntroon; 4 Sacred Kingfisher sightings on Molonglo Reach between the water
ski area and LBG (maybe the same bird); 4 Dollarbirds either drinking or
taking insects from the surface of Sullivans Ck. plus lots of Darter and
Cormorant activity both at Duntroon and Black Mtn Peninsula.
Cheers
