Members of the list who attended the most excellent presentation on John Gould on Sunday may have noted a ruckus on Central Basin when they left.  This was a large group of water skiers racing around Central Basin.

I was concerned that this was some form of testing the water for making such use a regular event so sent emails to Jon Stanhope and Bob McMullan  to (a) register a protest and (b) find out what was going on.

I have now received responses from both gentlemen.  Bob McMullan contacted NCA on my behalf and advised that this was continuation of a policy of allowing 2 such events per year (they have been in abeyance recently due to insurance issues).  He also pointed out that the events do have to comply with ACT Environmental issues (presumably noise pollution as well as other risks to the environment).  Mr Stanhope simply advised it was an NCA matter and gave me contact details for them - I have passed on the comment about ACT Environmental rules applying.

My acknowledgement to both correspondents thanked them and indicated that my concern would be far greater if this was to be a more regular event.
