Roosting places of Tawny Frogmouths

When we lived in Carwoola a pair bred in one of two eucalypts (about 100 m apart ) near our house for 10 years.  They were not unduly disturbed by a bushfire that came through the property.  Over the years I found them roosting in 27 different trees within about 200 m of the nest trees.  Once the chicks fledged the family would travel around together for about 2 months (November December) then I would lose track of them for January and the parents would return in February but not be found every day.  From April onwards I would usually find them - sometimes needing 30 minutes of searching if they had shifted from one end of the territory to the other- every day.

The behaviour changed somewhat after about 7 years which made me wonder if one of the pair had been replaced.  For reasons I cannot now recall I felt the male had continued, with a new female.

I have a few articles I compiled for Canberra Bird Notes if you are interested .

Hi all,

I watched a pair of Tawny Frogmouths (virtually always together: on the odd occasion, only one was present) roosting near Govetts Leap in the Upper Blue Mountains. My first observation was made (and photo record) was on 17 March and, several hundred photos later, the last time I saw at least one was 22 May.

Colleagues had reported their presence sometime before 17 March.  I observed them on a regular almost daily basis. They seemed to predominantly occupy one roost although on two or three occasions they had moved some 50 meters to another. They seemed to have gone now.

Can anyone direct me to any journal articles on their roosting behaviour or comment?

Many thanks

David in Blackheath
