Hi

In the mid 1990s I traveled from Wollongong to Nowra to twitch a Koel, then by the turn of the century they were common breeding migrants in Wollongong, now past Ulladulla, so not surprising as they continue to follow one of their favourite hosts south. Is this because those Red Wattlebirds in the north are a wake up to the Koels as in Wollongong I thought the number of begging young Koels sighted appeared to drop off after the late 2000s and the same appears to be happening in Ulladulla now forcing the Koels to find fresh Red Wattlebirds that do not recognise that they are being used.

Cheers Chris

I have heard of a couple of recent records of Koel chicks being fed by Red Wattlebirds at Mallacoota.  There is only one record (from Feb. 2017) of Koel breeding in East Gippsland on eBird so I ma getting the observers to submit reports.
