No, I don't think the subspecies was determined.

However, its accepted on the WA Museum's Checklist of the Birds of Western Australia with a note:
"Mutilated bird found aboard a vessel at Barrow I. January 2018."

Cheers,

Nigel

Really interesting stuff! Nigel do we know what the Elegant subspecies was on the Pilbara boat?

The IOC excel document have a note next to vigorsii (Double-striped Pitta Pitta vigorsii is a subspecies of Elegant Pitta P. elegans (Dickinson 2003)). vigorsii is also found in SW New Guinea.

There was also a dead Elegant Pitta found on a ship at the start of this year off the Pilbara coast.

John Darnell advises that an Elegant Pitta arrived at Barrow Island on a ship and sailed off on same ship when it departed without coming ashore!! He says photos show it to be the white-chinned race vigorsii sometimes split as a full species. I’ve not been given the dates of its ‘stay’. There are as yet no records for Australia.
