I visit Mallacoota quite often and do a fair bit of birding there but I
have no idea if or when I'll be going in July.
To give a detailed answer, key questions are:
- What sort of birds do you want to photograph? and
- What sort of camera do you have?
Basically anywhere at Mallacoota is good for birds! You can find the
following places as hotspots on eBird and the numbers refer to spots in the
attached mud map..
- For ducks the best place by far is the *Recycled water plant* *1* off
Watertrust Road. NB walk in from the road: the gate may be open but gets
locked when the workers leave.
- At the end of *Watertrust Road 2* is a locked gate: there's a nice
little wetland there which could be good with more patience than I have got.
- Shorebirds and gulls/terns I'd go to *Bastion Point3* at the mouth of
the Inlet;
- Heathland birds I'd go to *Shipwreck Creek* *4* (12km of rather
ordinary dirt road) and take the t*rack to Seal Creek *going to the
first patch of heath you come to;
- The airport fence on the *gun club track 5 *can have some good birds
and they are well exposed.
- The small jetties along *Coulls Inlet* *6* can be good for Cormorants
and Azure Kingfisher. The lagoon boardwalk at the end of the Inlet is
often good for herons and spoonbills.
I have never done it, but have heard good reports of Captain John's Tuesday
boat trips from Gypsy Point (that is where Graeme Pizzey did a lot of his
work on the Field Guide).
