hello Kathryn,

it's great to see you guys organising some nice survey work down there on King
Island.

if I may please suggest that whomever leads the survey team in the SW part of
the island, especially around the heath/ti-tree habitat at the Calcified Forest
walk, to keep their ears & eyes open for Beautiful Firetails.

in 09/02/2013, myself and Simon Mustoe heard two birds calling from within 5
metres away along the track that leads down from the carpark.

we didn't see them, but we didn't need to, to know what they were...

good luck!!

cheers for now,

martin cachard

Hello All Bird Conservationists:

'Wings on King’ will be running surveys of shared sites on the 27-28th April,
King Island, with orientation and group formation on the evening of Thursday
26th. This is an important project, monitoring the birds of King Island with
repeated surveys over 50 Shared Sites with all data being entered into Birdata.
We are always short of experienced birders, particularly with Tasmanian bird
experiences who are willing to lead small survey groups and help teach locals
how to bird. Registrations for Autumn Surveys are now open and we would love
to see you here. But you do need to book accomodation and flights well before
time so if you are interested, get onto it now.

On the Saturday evening after a casual dinner, there will be a showing of the
new documentary ’The "Desperate Plight of the Orange Bellied Parrot” made by
David Neilsen and Snowgum Films. This will be followed by a Forum with an
expert panel to discuss conservation of our King Island endemic species and how
we can achieve this. You may not be aware that the next most likely bird
extinction in Australia is the King Island Brown Thornbill, but 3 of our other
9 subspecies are also listed as endangered including the King Island Scrubtit
that is Critically Endangered. So we have some very real and difficult issues
to manage here, with very few people on the ground to do it, so we do need help
from other bird lovers - please.
