Re: Binoculars (Duncan Cape)

Duncan, I had the same problem with a pair of Pentax 7x50s that I have owned
for 40 years. In my case, it was my eyes that were the culprit. From age
47 onwards, my near focus deteriorated (as it does), and impacted my
binocular close focus as well, to the extent that they now close focus (for
me) only down to 12m. While that does not help you personally, the Leitz
close focus will be perfectly good for a pair of younger eyes.

It would be good to know when Dave & Michael's negative Zeiss service
experience was. Before I bought my Conquests (2015) I heard similar stories
(globally - including comments on birdforum!) But they were generally all 'a
few years ago'.?
However others also said that Zeiss had upped their game, and in Australia
they had changed their local agent. The Conquests were (for me) the best
binoculars in their class / price range that I tried out. On a Uni ecology
research fieldtrip all the 'birders' in the group had either Terra, Conquest
or Victory. I gave them the benefit of the doubt.
When mine had an eyecup fault it was a couple of days after Christmas last
year- and about 48 hours before I was due to fly to Argentina for 6 weeks.
The shop I bought them from (optics central in Mitcham, Melbourne) were
thankfully open although the agents were not - I did however have contact
back from Zeiss Birding in America who said they would try their best to get
some eyecups to be somehow before I left.
Optics Central had a better plan though, as they weren't confident the
spares would come in time. They took my binos off me and loaned me a brand
new shop pair for a moderate returnable deposit.?
My binos went off for warranty repair and were ready when I got back from
Argentina. I was not charged a penny.
I am a big fan of both Zeiss and Optics Central based on recent experience.
Cheers?
Mike?

I got mine from memory around 2003 and they were certainly within the
10 year warranty at the time. I got them from the old BOCA shop which was no
longer around at the time I recall, The local agent was a "hunting and
fishing" dealer in Werribee (handy as I live there) at the time.

Further to the discussion some time ago:

This report from ABC news prompts the question - are the Morcombe and Pizzey
apps going to work with iOS 11? They certainly don't belong in the
graveyard.

When iOS 11 releases, Apple could kill up to 200,000 apps. Here's
how to find out if any of the apps on your phone face the
chopping block.

G'day Peter

Both apps have been updated to work with the upcoming iOS version 11. On
your device go to Settings-General-About-Applications and you can see which
(if any) of your apps will cease to work).

I will also give a plug to Optics Central. My Kowas I bought from Bintel
seized up and although technically under warranty at eight years the agent
had changed and they weren't offering to get them fixed. Kowa Japan didn't
respond and after research I ordered Conquests from Optic Central on spec
(30 days return policy)- its hard to try out bins when you live in
Katherine. I ordered them Friday afternoon and they were at Katherine post
office on the Monday and I'm delighted with the quality at that price.

Hello,

I work as a graphic designer for Zoos SA, a not-for-profit conservation
charity, and I am trying to find an image of the Red-backed Kingfisher for
our new species signage. The species signage is all about connecting people
with wildlife and inspiring them to care for animals and their habitats.

I have found an image on the internet created by David Taylor that is
perfect and I have tried to access his website ? davidsbirdingiumages.com,
but unfortunately the site/server cannot be found. I would like to contact
David to request the use of his image for our signage, but am having
difficulty finding a way to do this. Can you help please? Please let me
know as soon as you can - thank you very much.

Regards, Janette

I purchased 10x50 Leitz binoculars 45 years ago. These have given, and
continue to give, excellent service. However they have one annoying fault,
in that they do not focus close enough. Recently at an excellent bird hide
at Myall Park Botanic Garden nothing at the water source was in focus. I
would like to obtain some new binoculars similar to the ones I have but with
better close focus. Could anyone please advise?

I? have a pair of Minox BV10x42 which focus as close as 1.2 metres ( good
for looking at flowers without bending <G>). I imported them via an Aussie
expat in America who manages all sorts of things and has Australian banking.
Most makers have full specifications on the net.
