Subject: [australasianseabirds] Northern fulmar - first record for Southern
Hemisphere, discovered via NZ Birds Online    Apologies for cross-posting:
In October last year, Leon Berard loaded a most unexpected image onto NZ Birds
Online. He loaded it as an Antarctic fulmar, but late last week his image was
accepted by the Records Appraisal Committee of Birds New Zealand as being the
first record from New Zealand of a northern fulmar. As far as I know, this is
the first record of this species from the Southern Hemisphere (it is normally
found in Arctic seas, and the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans). For the
full story of the discovery of this bird, and Leon’s photograph, see the Te
Papa blog: A new bird for New Zealand – northern fulmar.   I have this morning
loaded a new page for northern fulmar on to the NZ Birds Online website. There
is only the one image so far, and we welcome further images of northern fulmars
if any of you have them. We are particularly interested to see images of dark
morph fulmars from the North Pacific (as this is where we think Leon’s bird
came from), but any images of dark or pale birds throughout their range will be
gratefully received.   There have been hundreds of stunning images loaded on to
the website in the last month or so, with the total archive now in excess of
9400 images. Among the images loaded (or re-organised), we have new images of
Christmas Island shearwater (Mike Thorsen), Cape gannet (Geoff de Lisle),
Hudsonian godwit (Nigel Voaden), and macaroni penguin (one of my own).   Colin
