I decided not to take my camera this afternoon when I went for a walk, and as
is often the case when I do that, I regretted it! As I was just about back to
the start of the walk I could hear a young kookaburra calling incessantly, so
checked out where I thought the call came from, and saw it sitting close to a
second bird. The second bird had a fish in its bill, I think a Redfin about
20cms long. It moved the fish about in its bill, but didn't swallow it while I
watched, nor did it seem as if it was going to share with the young bird, which
continued carrying on. When I moved closer to get a better look, they both
took off to a tree closer to the bank of the creek. It's the first time I've
seen one with a fish, and fish aren't mentioned as a food item in Pizzey. I
don't have Hanzab so wonder how common a diet item fish is for Kookaburras.
